Banks are the most generous employers in Korea. According to a report by the Financial Supervisory Service released on Tuesday, excluding corporate executives, bank staffers are paid the highest average wages.
Citibank Korea took first place, paying W76.3 million (US$1=W976) on average to ordinary staff. Next came Kookmin Bank with W72.3 million, followed by Korea Exchange Bank with W70.5 million and Shinhan Bank with W69.2 million. Hana Bank and the Industrial Bank of Korea pay ordinary staff some W65 million on average and SC First Bank W60 million. Among eight commercial banks, Woori Bank, which is under the management of the Korea Deposit Insurance Corp., pays the smallest per-capita average wages of W55.4 million.
Banks pay higher per-capita average wages to ordinary staffers than the nation¡¯s top 30 non-banking listed firms. Hyundai Engineering and Construction pays on average wages of W71.1 million, slightly less than Kookmin Bank. The three shipbuilders enjoying an unprecedentedly bullish market also pay less than banks. Executives of Samsung Electronics receive far bigger wages than their counterparts at other companies, but ordinary staff at Samsung Electronics get paid only some W60.2 million on average, less than employees at banks.
