Some 49.1 percent of voters support opposition candidates in the upcoming general election on April 9 as a means to hold the ruling party in check, according to a survey of 1,047 voters from across the country by Gallup Korea for the Chosun Ilbo on Saturday. Some 36.4 percent supported Grand National Party candidates, citing the need to stabilize the country.
In a Gallup Korea poll on Dec. 26, right after the presidential election, 49.6 percent supported calls to stabilize the country, as against 40.1 percent who saw the need to keep the ruling party in check. It has taken a mere three months to reverse the trend.
Some 38.1 percent approved of President Lee Myung-bak's performance, while 24.4 percent disapproved and 11.7 percent said it was average.
In a Gallup poll on March 2, right after Lee was inaugurated, 52.0 percent approved of his performance.
In party approval ratings, the GNP still topped the list with 42.1 percent, about three times the approval rating of the UDP (14.5 percent). They were followed by the Democratic Labor Party (6.1 percent), a new Pro-Park Geun-hye coalition (4.4 percent), the Renewal of Korea Party (3.6 percent), the Liberty Forward Party (2.8 percent), and the New Progressive Party (1 percent).
The latest survey has a margin of error of 3 percentage points and a 95 percent confidence level.
