Korea will be the biggest victim among Asian-Pacific countries if the U.S. economy slides into a slump due to the subprime mortgage crisis, according to the UN. The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific(ESCAP) said in the "Economic and Social Survey for Asia and the Pacific 2008" that Korea, Taiwan and Singapore will be hit hardest if the U.S. faces an economic recession as their economies are export-driven. But it predicted that if the U.S. economy just slows down, the Korean economy will grow 4.9 percent as it did last year, because China continues to provide it with export opportunities. ESCAP predicted Korean consumer prices will rise by 3.1 percent. The Korean government aims to help the economy grow some 6 percent and keep inflation at 3.3 percent.
