The Samsung Group has presented a list of 700 proxy bank accounts managed through Samsung Securities to the team of special counsel Cho Joon-woong, whose team is probing the corruption scandal surrounding the conglomerate, press reports said. The amount in the proxy accounts reportedly tops W2 trillion (US$1=W977). Samsung claims that the money is an inheritance left by the late Samsung founder Lee Byung-chul.
But the investigators declined to confirm whether Samsung presented such a list or admitted the existence of bank accounts opened in the name of former and current Samsung staff. Believing that Samsung has operated some 1,300 proxy banks accounts via Samsung Securities and Samsung Fire and Marine Insurance, investigators have traced transaction records to find out the exact amount of the slush funds.
