President Lee Myung-bak, during a Cabinet meeting in Cheong Wa Dae Tuesday, reproached ministers for their reluctance to cut the number of public officials, despite his declared intent to slim down the government.
Directly calling the name of ministers in question, President Lee said government agencies made up excuses to maintain their staff. Lee told Strategy and Finance Minister Kang Man-soo his ministry created various taskforces to keep public officials who were subject to layoffs in the process of government reform. He rebuked the minister, saying that is why the ministry was known as the ¡°MOFIA.¡±
Turning to the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, President Lee said it was ¡°anachronistic if public officials think that they have to do everything.¡± He ordered Minister of Public Administration and Security Won Se-hoon to submit lists of government agency staff which will show whether they have reorganized and reduced personnel or not. Won¡¯s ministry oversees government agency reforms.
