Gov¡¯t to Prepare New Consumer Price Index

Lee Promises to Curb Prices of Daily Necessities
52 Items Placed Under Gov't Price Control
The Ministry of Strategy and Finance said Tuesday it is developing a new consumer price index. The move comes after President Lee Myung-bak on Monday ordered the government to take special care to keep down the prices of 50 daily necessities.

A ministry official said his ministry is discussing with the National Statistical Office developing a new consumer price index of the 50 daily necessities. The ministry will also devise measures to curb a rise in the prices of the 50 items, which include instant noodles, public service fares and main agricultural products.

The NSO announces an index on the prices of 489 products and a living price index on a basket of 152 daily necessities.

In a briefing by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, President Lee proposed extra price controls on daily necessities to curb an increase in prices despite overall inflation.
