Grand National Party lawmaker Chung Mong-joon maintains a comfortable lead over former presidential candidate Chung Dong-young of the United Democratic Party in Dongjak, Seoul, one of the most-contested electoral districts for the April 9 general election. In a survey by Gallup Korea for the Chosun Ilbo and SBS, the GNP candidate scored 49.3 percent and the UDP hopeful 37.4 percent.
In Jongno, GNP lawmaker Park Jin (39.7 percent) led UDP chairman Sohn Hak-kyu (30.4 percent). But in Eunpyeong, Creative Korea Party chairman Moon Kook-hyun (43.6 percent) was ahead of the influential GNP lawmaker Lee Jae-oh (37.1 percent) by 6.5 points.
The survey was conducted in 17 electoral districts throughout Seoul. The overall results show the GNP and the UDP candidates neck-and-neck in eight districts within the margin of error. GNP candidates were ahead of UDP candidates in seven districts, while the UDP candidate led his GNP rival in one.
Nonetheless, the poll showed dents to the GNP¡¯s absolute supremacy in Seoul, the region behind President Lee Myung-bak's overwhelming victory in the December presidential election.
The telephone poll was conducted on Saturday of a total of 8,880 voters, more than 500 in each electoral district. It had a margin of error of 4.4 percentage points and a 95 percent confidence level.
