Amid soaring wheat flour prices, Paris Baguette, the country's leading bakery franchise, has decided to raise the prices of some of its 200 bread products by 10-20 percent by late March.
Since late February Paris Baguette has increased the prices of 38 kinds of bread by W100 to W200 (US$1=W965). Other bread products will be gradually priced higher by the end of this month. The price of toast bread will not go up.
CJ Tous Les Jours, another bakery, has also increased its bread prices by about 10 percent. Crown Bakery plans to follow suit eventually.
Bakery industry insiders say soaring prices of raw materials such as wheat flour, butter and dairy products have forced them to push up bread prices. Having already cut personnel costs and overhauled their baking procedures, they say they have now reached their limit.
