Divorced Couples Required to Hold Joint Custody
Some divorced couples in Korea could be ordered to hold joint responsibility for child-rearing.

The Seoul Family Court has made a ruling that would allow judges to require that both parents hold child custody in the event of a divorce.

Judges would enforce joint custody based on existing circumstances to better guarantee the child's well-being.

The court said the decision was based on understanding that continuous and regular interaction with both the mother and father is essential for underage children.

The ruling also applies to couples who send their children to public care facilities due to financial difficulties.

Previously, only one parent was given guardianship with child-rearing responsibility.
