The 2008 World Short Track Speed Skating Championships will open Friday in Korea's northeastern city of Gangneung.
Some 240 athletes from 32 countries are participating in this year's three-day competitions.
There are a total of 10 events including men's and women's 100, 500 and 1,500-meter races as well as the 3,000 and 5,000-meter relay programs for both men and women.
In recent months Korea has sponsored various other international winter sporting events such as the International Paralympic Committee's Ski Competition and Biathalon World Cups.
