Samsung Electronics staff are miffed at news that the firm paid its six inside directors including vice chairmen Yoon Jong-yong some W79.7 million (US$1=948) last year. The electronics giant delivered the news in a regulatory filing on Wednesday.
The amount is equivalent to an average of W13.3 billion each, more than double the amount paid in 2006.
Samsung staff said it is not just about money. ˇ°We don't mind directors getting handsome rewards if the company made a profit and they contributed to it,ˇ± one staffer said.
What they feel uncomfortable about is that the directors awarded themselves a huge compensation package while staff were pressured to make sacrifices. Since last summer, citing a sluggish global chip market and poor profits, the semiconductor maker has carried out a company-wide early retirement program and other measures in a bid to cut costs and tighten discipline.
A general manager who asked to remain anonymous said, ˇ°Samsung is in trouble now, trapped by the corruption scandal. I hope the current crisis will bring some changes in the mindset and attitudes of management.ˇ±
The country's largest conglomerate is subject to a special inquiry over allegations of setting up huge slush funds, bribery and other irregularities.
