Students' favorite junk foods like soft drinks, instant noodle and fries will disappear from school cafeterias starting this year. The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education unveiled basic health principles for students, which will ban the sale of specified unhealthy foods at school cafeterias or through vending machines.
The new measures are follow-ups to the Ministry of Education's policy announced in September last year against the sale of soft drinks to promote the health of students. Other provinces and cities will also ban the sale of those junk foods at school.
New installation of vending machines except those selling tissues and sanitary napkins will be banned. High calorie food and frequent causes of summer food poisoning like instant noodle, fries, hamburgers, sandwiches and kimbap (rolled rice) will also disappear from school cafeterias. But the sale of bread, ice cream and snacks like cookies and crackers will be allowed.
The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education said it banned the sale of food that can cause serious disorders like obesity and osteoporosis to children.
