LG Electronics Wednesday said it has signed a cross-licensing pact with a unit of General Electric. The agreement allows LG and GE Consumer and Industrial to use each other's patented technologies without paying licensing fees for refrigerators and cooking appliances. Since 1999 when they jointly developed a light wave-microwave oven, LG and GE have maintained a technological and business partnership.
LG Electronics president Lee Young-ha was quoted in a press release as saying, "We expect this cross-licensing pact to further boost the competitiveness of LG Electronics' home appliances." As part of efforts to build up its global technology base in the home appliance sector, LG in 2000 partnered Matsushita's air conditioning division and allied itself with Microsoft in the home networking sector in 2001.
