Minister Warns of Failure to Ratify FTA
Trade Minister Kim Jong-hoon has warned that a failure to ratify the Korea-U.S. free trade agreement in the current National Assembly session could cause serious problems. Kim told reporters ratification could be held up for a long time if the current 17th Assembly misses the opportunity and the next parliament has to deal with the trade pact when it goes to work in June.

¡°In that event, the FTA will have to go through the same procedures as it did when it was submitted to the current assembly,¡± he said. ¡°And furthermore, ratification will be difficult in the U.S. after spring, since the presidential election is approaching there.¡± Kim said ratification of the trade deal has become impossible in the ongoing extraordinary parliamentary session, but he still expressed hope the current assembly can ratify the FTA since its tenure continues until May.
