Prosecutors have cleared president-elect Lee Myung-bak of slander charges. Cheong Wa Dae had lodged a complaint against Lee, then the presidential candidate of the Grand National Party, for slander in September last year, after Lee said the presidential office was masterminding a scheme to damage his campaign. Senior prosecutor Shin Jong-dae on Thursday said Lee had ˇ°objective reasonsˇ± to denounce the presidential office at the time.
Prosecutors also declined to indict Lee for tax evasion, saying indictment was impossible since the National Tax Service did not lodge a charge against him. A progressive organization called Jinbo Corea had accused Lee of evading taxes by falsely registering his children as employees of a building management company he ran. Lee belatedly paid all related taxes after the accusations surfaced.
