Lee, Park in Bid to Mend GNP Fences
Internal conflict in the Grand National Party seems to be nearing resolution. Former GNP chairwoman Park Geun-hye in a meeting with Lee Myung-bak on Wednesday briefed the president elect about her visit to China as his special envoy last week. After the 20-minute closed meeting, Park told reporters Lee had stressed the need for the party to set ¡°fair standards and principles¡± for candidate nominations for the general elections in April. Voicing agreement, Park said she told the president-elect that no one in her camp should be dropped in the nomination process just because they supported her during the party primary. The president-elect promised not to let that happen.

Lee called in GNP Secretary General Lee Bang-ho Wednesday night and gave directives about candidate selection.

Conflict between the camps of Park and Lee was not completely resolved even after Lee won the party¡¯s presidential nomination in August last year, and discord over candidate nominations and the party leadership threatened to escalate.

Park said Lee called for ¡°concerted effort to develop the nation and ushering in a new era¡± and she promised her full support. A key aide to the president-elect said that Lee treated Park ¡°not as the head of a party faction but as one of next generation of leaders.¡± Lee was also said to have briefed Park about the general direction in appointing members of his Cabinet. He also asked her to visit Beijing with him for the 2008 Olympic Games in August.
