Lisa Vershbow, the wife of U.S. Ambassador Alexander Vershbow, was given a Korean name on Wednesday. The Korea-U.S. Alliance Friendship Society presented the U.S. ambassador's wife with the Korean name Park Shin-ye ("shin" means trust and "ye" means art) in a ceremony at a hotel in Sogong-dong, Seoul.
The society also presented William Stanton, the U.S. Embassy's deputy chief of mission, with the Korean name Ban Dong-hui ("dong" means east and "hui" means shine).
Back in March 2006, the friendship society presented the U.S. ambassador with the Korean name Park Bo-woo ("bo" means value or jewel and "woo" means friend), in the hope that "both Koreans and Americans would value the bilateral alliance as a jewel and remain friends forever."
The society decided to give Lisa Vershbow the same surname as her husband. The name Shin-ye was given in consideration of her love of art -- she has held a craftwork exhibition in Seoul.
Stanton's Korean surname Ban is based on the initial sound of his first name, Bill, and the name Dong-hui expresses the wish that the Korean-U.S. friendship ¡°should shine forever just like the rays of the sun rising in the east,¡± the society said.
