President-elect Lee Myung-bak on Tuesday appointed Sookmyung Women's University President Lee Kyung-sook to head the committee that will handle his move into the presidential office. Lee Kyung-sook is the first woman appointed head of a Transition Committee since the first such body was set up in 1998. Kim Hyong-o, a four-term Grand National Party lawmaker and former floor leader, becomes vice chairman. The president-elect named GNP lawmakers Yim Tae-hee and Joo Ho-young as his chief secretary and spokesman.
Freshly appointed, Joo made the announcement at GNP headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul. "Chairwoman Lee Kyung-sook has been elected president of Sookmyung Women's University four times under the direct election system. She is believed to be the right person to seek ¡®change amid harmony.' She was chosen in consideration of her outstanding university management ability and her gender,¡± he said. Lee was a legislative member of the Special Committee for National Security Measures under the Chun Doo-hwan military government, but Joo said, ¡°Historical judgment has already been made on an event that lies 25 years in the past. We gave higher priority to her outstanding ability and the leadership she has shown in recent years."
The Transition Committee consists of one special committee and seven subcommittees. Under the chairwoman, the special committee is tasked with boosting national competitiveness and comprises six taskforces in areas like government reform and deregulation and inviting investment. The working-level subcommittees will deal with planning and coordination; political affairs; foreign, unification and national security affairs; public administration; economic affairs 1 and 2; and social, education and culture affairs.
