Oil Slick Keeps Spreading South
The slick caused by the worst oil spill in Korea¡¯s history moved southwards on Wednesday, the sixth day after the disaster hit the Western coastal area of Chungcheong Province last week. Disaster headquarters at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries said workers will accelerate their cleanup efforts, noting a forecast of strong winds and high waves in the central West Sea.

According to a Maritime Police situation room, the slick resumed its southward movement and expanded to an island 37 kilometers from Anmyeon Island. With the help of large vessels and helicopters, anti-disaster workers focused on preventing the slick from spreading to Anmyeon.

Local residents carry away baskets full of crude oil removed from Mallipo beach, South Chungcheong Province on Wednesday. Korea declared the coastal regions hit by a massive oil spill as special disaster areas Tuesday, clearing the way for government assistance to the stricken shore. /AP

Oil slicks remain off the 40-km coast between Geunso Bay and Garorim Bay. According to the Korea National Parks Authority, a 1.5-m dolphin was found dead near Taean, the most severely affected area, on Tuesday. Experts assume that the animal died on Friday or Saturday, shortly after the oil spill occurred. The National Institute of Biological Resources under the Ministry of Environment is trying to ascertain whether it was the oil that killed it.
