An environmental group said Korea is among the world's least effective nations in cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions.
In Germanwatch's Climate Change Performance Index, Korea ranked 51st among 56 countries in terms of efforts to reduce greenhouse gases, according to Germany's Spiegel newspaper.
The German environmental watchdog evaluates and compares the climate protection performance of the 56 countries that are responsible for 90 percent of carbon dioxide emissions. Korea's ranking is down three notches from last year.
The CCPI is calculated based on various criteria including the amount of carbon dioxide each country emits and its government's environmental protection policies.
Korea is the world's 10th largest carbon dioxide discharger, following the U.S., China, Russia, Japan, India, Germany, Canada, Britain and Italy.
Among the top 10 CO2-making countries, Russia (50th), Canada (53rd) and the U.S (55th). were evaluated as poor performers in reducing greenhouse gases.
Sweden ranked the best in cutting emissions with 65.6 points, while Saudi Arabia ranked last with 30.0 points. The Middle Eastern country was called the most irresponsible environmental pollutant.
Indonesia placed highest amongst Asian nations by ranking 15th. Taiwan came in 26th, China 40th, Japan 42nd, Singapore 46th and Malaysia 49th.
