Jeep Attack Leaves Marine Dead, Military on Alert

Investigators have found that the suspect who attacked two marines in Ganghwa, Gyeonggi Province on Thursday, killing one of them and stealing their weapons, has the blood type AB. A military-police joint investigation team obtained DNA from a blood sample and the man¡¯s hat from the crime scene.

Investigators believe the attacker is himself a former marine, given that the crime was audacious and the man knew all about the shift-change time and transport routes of marines. Based on that assumption, investigators made a list of 10,321 men discharged from the victims¡¯ regiment since 1989. Investigators narrowed this down to 3,400 who live in Seoul and the capital area, based on witnesses¡¯ testimony that the criminal speaks with a Seoul accent and used a car with a Gyeonggi Province license plate in the attack.

With the additional information that the fugitive has blood type AB, investigators are now down to 600 men. The number will further decrease when investigators again select those with criminal records from similar cases. Some witnesses said the attacker had a sign saying ¡°proxy driver¡± on his car.

However, the investigation could take a long time if the DNA of none of the suspects matches that found on the crime scene and investigators fail to find the criminal in the first pool of suspects, because that will widen the field to thousands again.
