The Samsung Group is at a loss to explain the worst oil spill in South Korea¡¯s history, which occurred after a crane-carrying barge from Samsung Heavy Industries collided with a Hong Kong-registered oil tanker in waters off Mallipo, Taean, South Chungcheong Province. The accident adds to the woes of a conglomerate already shaken by a massive corruption scandal.

Samsung Heavy Industries CEO Kim Jing-wan and other executives spent all Sunday identifying the damage caused by the oil slick and instructing repair work. ¡°We do not think it is appropriate to comment about the causes of the accident since the investigation is underway,¡± the company said. ¡°But we will not try to avoid our responsibility.¡±

Industry insiders say any reluctance on the part of the company to shoulder compensation, which for now cannot even be estimated but is bound to be astronomical, would tarnish the entire group¡¯s image.
