New findings show Korea has the highest number of male smokers among sixteen countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
The National Health Insurance Corporation reports the smoking rate among Korean males was nearly 47 percent in 2005. The death rate due to lung cancer was also higher than the OECD average with about 66 people dying per every 100,000 Koreans.
The smoking rate among Korean women however was the lowest with only 4.6-percent. Korea also had the lowest number of obese people in 2005 with only 3.5 percent of the population being obese, the lowest among 13 OECD countries.
Experts link the low obesity rate in Korea to the popularity of fruits and vegetables in the Korean diet. In 2003 Korean people consumed about 275 kg of fruits and vegetables a year, ranking fourth among 29 OECD countries.
