"I wanted to let opinion leaders in France, a cultural power, know that cars and mobile phones are not the only things Korea has. I wanted to build the image of Korea, a 'soft power', where culture and cutting-edge technologies, tradition and modernity go hand in hand."

Choi Jung-wha, a professor at the Graduate School of Interpretation and Translation of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and a leading interpreter at international conferences, organized an event to build a new image of Korea in Paris on Tuesday evening. The Corea Image Communication Institute, an organization she chairs, hosted an event called CICI Korea 2007 at the Pavilion Gabriel near Concorde Square in the center of Paris.

The audience cheered pianist Kim Sun-wook (19), the winner of the Leeds International Piano Competition, and the Korean non-verbal drama performance "Jump." CICI showed videos about Korea between performances.

"We live in an era when any country that can improve its national image ahead of others can become a genuine winner in the economic war,Ħħ Choi said. Her French husband, Didier Beltoise, who is the general manager of the COEX InterContinental Seoul Hotel, accompanied her.

Some 300 prominent French figures from various walks of life included Patrick Beaudoin, the president of the French-Korean Parliamentarian Friendship Association.
