Foreign Minister Song Min-soon on Sunday appeared to distance himself from Cheong Wa Dae attempts to get a peace conference under way, saying the six nations in nuclear talks ˇ°will focus on the smooth disablement of North Korea's nuclear facilities by year's end.ˇ± The presidential office has been pushing for peace negotiations for the Korean Peninsula and a summit among the signatories to the armistice - the two Koreas, China and the U.S. -- to declare the Korean War officially over.

Song was speaking to reporters before leaving for the U.S., saying that the two Koreas ˇ°can move on to the next stage only after Pyongyang completes the promised disablement of its nuclear facilitiesˇ± by year-end. He made it clear that his visit to the U.S. is not aimed at discussing a permanent peace mechanism for the Korean Peninsula. He meets with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice this week.
