In a potential blow for Samsung Electronics¡¯ brand image in Latin America, the firm¡¯s regional mobile phone advertising model has tested positive for drugs, local media reported Wednesday.
Announcing the selection of Paulina Rubio (36) to advertise the firm¡¯s premium mobile phone F300, Samsung Electronics Mexico president Song Joo-ho in June said she is ¡°a top Mexican singer and even beats global pop star Beyonce in popularity among Latin American youngsters.¡±
Samsung Mexico staff said they selected Rubio since she scored the highest popularity rating in a survey. ¡°Although this incident will deal a blow to Samsung¡¯s image, celebrity scandals of this magnitude are not uncommon in Latin America,¡± a staffer said. Samsung will decide whether to stop the contract after consultation with local mobile operator Telcel and Rubio.
According to the reports, the singer has been denied U.S. residency after testing positive for drugs. She and her husband had traveled to the U.S. Consulate in Juarez, Mexico, to apply for a U.S. residency and both underwent a medical exam as part of the process.
