A team of biologists at Seoul National University led by Prof. Jung Yong-keun has discovered a gene that can suppress or kill off cancerous growths in humans.
The human body can locate and kill off abnormal cells, but if this function performs poorly abnormal cells don't die off but cause diseases such as cancer.
The researchers discovered that the adenylate kinase 2 (AK2) gene released through the mitochondria membrane can cause errant cells to self-destruct. They also found that when the AK2 gene was resuscitated among various kinds of liver cancer cells, the body responded better to anti-cancer treatments.
The team's findings were published in the Internet edition of the journal Nature Cell Biology on Monday.
