Sex has proved more powerful than money. According to Bloomberg and other news agencies on Saturday, Wallstreet.com failed to topple porn.com as the top-selling web address so far this year.
Experts predicted that Wallstreet.com would fetch more than $10 million in an auction on Saturday, but the auction failed when the top bid of $3 million wasn't enough to meet the reserve price, thought to be around $5 million.
That means pornography websites still occupy the most valuable real estate on the Internet. Porn.com set this year's sales record for a web address when it was sold for $9.5 million. Sex.com is the most expensive web address ever, valued at $12 million.
The online sex industry dwarfs other Internet businesses. According to web statistics company TopTenReviews.com, worldwide revenues for the pornography industry in 2006 were at least $97 billion, almost double the $57 billion earned in 2003. Google's sales in 2006 stood at $13.4 billion. Internet powerhouse Korea is also a leader in this sector. TopTenReviews.com said Korea is the world's second largest porn market.
"Every second $3,075.64 is spent on pornography," TopTenReviews.com said. Some Internet searches for porn-related keywords have decreased slightly, but the industry is still growing, the company said.
