Around 300 people who took the Test of English for International Communication (TOIEC) last month were given incorrect scores for the exam, the Korea TOEIC Committee said.
The Korea TOEIC Committee said there were errors in entering some scores into the computer system for the monthly TOEIC given Aug. 27. The committee said all the correct scores were updated by noon on Sunday.
On Saturday, a day before the committee corrected the errors, some test takers called into doubt their low scores. According to candidates, a student whose TOEIC practice scores normally ranged from 800 to 900 scored about 100 on the August test.
The Korea TOEIC Committee said there were errors in the scores of around 300 examinees who took the test at one middle school and two high schools in Bundang, Gyeonggi Province.
The supervisors of the exam, YBM Education and the Korea TOEIC Committee, were attacked on some websites by angry test candidates who complained the wrong scores could affect their job applications.
"We admit that some errors occurred in entering scores into the computer system," an official from the Korea TOEIC Committee said. "We will find the problem and prevent it from occurring again." There was no problem in marking the exams, the committee said.
The committee made no official public apology for the gaffe, but rather notified those candidates whose scores were wrongly reported by email and telephone.
