An art auction in Seoul over the weekend brought in W36.3 billion (US$1=W928), beating the previous Korean record for a single auction. One piece, a 1986 Andy Warhol silk-screen called "Self-portrait," set a new record auction price for a foreign artwork in the country.
Seoul Auction exhibited 1,500 artworks by joining hands with Sotheby's in New York and Japan's Shinwa Art Auction for the "Art Auction Show in Seoul" event at the COEX convention center in Seoul from Wednesday to Sunday. Of those items, 556 were put up for auction on Saturday and Sunday and 437 were sold.
The Warhol "Self-portrait" sold for W2.7 billion, beating the previous auction price record for a foreign artwork in Korea. The previous record was held by Marc Chagall's oil painting "Le peintre à la veste orange" which fetched W970 million at an auction on Sept. 4.
