Former Democratic Labor Party chairman Kwon Young-ghil has won the party¡¯s nomination to run in December¡¯s presidential election in the second round of the party's primary. Kwon defeated rival Sim Sang-jeong by winning 52.74 percent or 19,109 out of 36,231 votes. This is Kwon¡¯s third bid for the presidency after he failed in 1997 and 2002, when he took 1.2 percent and 3.9 percent. After being selected, Kwon pledged to win the presidential election and help progressive forces take power by confronting the conservative Grand National Party. He said the ¡°self-appointed progressives¡± loyal to President Roh Moo-hyun are neither united nor strong enough to beat the GNP. Shim promised to support Kwon in the election campaign. In the first round on Sept. 9, Kwon failed to win a majority and had to face the second-placed Shim in a second round.
