Medical research has shown that capsaicin, the substance that makes chili peppers taste hot, helps control helicobacter pylori, a bacterium that causes stomach diseases like gastritis. The findings contradict a common belief that capsaicin is bad for your health since it excites the stomach.
Prof. Lee Yong-chan from the Division of Gastroenterology of Yonsei University Severance Hospital experimented by injecting different levels of a capsaicin concentration into the stomach cells of patients with helicobacter pylori. The results showed that the higher the capsaicin level, the more effective it was in controlling stomach inflammation, Lee said on Wednesday.
The results don't necessarily mean that eating a lot of peppers is good for the stomach, Lee added, since the experiment was conducted on cells in a lab. The findings will be published in the October edition of international medical journal Helicobacter.
