Retailers are preparing for a booming Chuseok holiday season by offering super-premium gift sets that cost W10 million and more.

Lotte Department Store and Shinsegae Department Store are both selling Louis XIII Black Pearl cognac for W15 million. Lotte has one set and Shinsegae has two of just 768 limited editions. ¡°These sets aren¡¯t just intended to be sold, they¡¯re also to demonstrate that our store has such expensive gifts,¡± a Lotte official said.

VitroSys Incorporation, which sells cultured wild ginseng root, said they have prepared 100 W4.4 million sets of condensed extract of cultured Korean mountain ginseng root. "In response to customer requests for more expensive products, we are planning to launch W10 million sets by the end of the year," a VitroSys official said.

The situation is similar in the wine market. Lotte is offering W7.7 million bottles of 1982 Chateau Latour and Shinsegae has W2.5 million bottles of 1982 Chateau Mouton Rothschild.

Other premium Chuseok gifts at Lotte Department Store include W5 million gift sets of Korean-style cakes and cookies, W3 million gift sets of dried persimmons in lacquered ware and gift sets of dried yellow corbina fish for between W1.5 million to W2 million.

¡°Last year we sold half of our 100 W2 million dried yellow corbina gift sets, but this year we expect to sell 60 to 70 sets," a Shinsegae official said.

Meanwhile online retailer GS eShop is offering W1.12 million gift sets of ten dried yellow corbinas and W1.1 million gift sets of 7.2 kg Korean beef.
