Grand National Party presidential candidate Lee Myung-bak still leads the pack of contenders by a massive margin, scoring 54.5 percent approval ratings. With the presidential election 100 days away, the Chosun Ilbo commissioned Hankook Research to conduct the 21st survey on presidential candidates on Saturday of 1,004 people over 19. United New Democratic Party presidential frontrunner Sohn Hak-kyu came second with 8.2 percent, followed by Sohn¡¯s party rivals Chung Dong-young with 6.4 percent and Rhyu Si-min with 3.6 percent.

Asked who was most likely to reinvigorate the economy, and reform the nation, 61.2 percent and 46.6 percent of respondents named Lee. Six out of 10 were unhappy with Cheong Wa Dae for pressing charges against Lee for defamation. The presidential office reported Lee to the prosecution after the candidate claimed Cheong Wa Dae was behind an organized campaign against him. Only 21.3 percent approved of the charges.
As for the political parties, the GNP won 56.4 percent approval ratings, the UNDP 15.8 percent and the Democratic Labor Party 10.4 percent. The Democratic Party scored 5.9 percent and the People First Party 0.7 percent. Some 65.6 percent of respondents said President Roh Moo-hyun was mishandling government, while 28.4 percent approved of his achievements. The confidence level of the poll was 95 percent with a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
