Smoking 'Biggest Cause of Stroke for Men'
The major cause of stroke for men is smoking and for women drinking, Korean researchers have concluded. The research team led by Prof. Yoon Seok-jun at the Department of Preventive Medicine at Korea University¡¯s medical college said Sunday they analyzed statistics on disease, mortality rates and public nutrition released in 2001. According to Yoon, smoking is the most frequent cause of stroke among men, followed by drinking, hypertension, lack of exercise, obesity and hyperlipidemia. Among women, drinking and insufficient physical exercise were the main causes of stroke. Next came smoking and hypertension.

The findings will be published in the October edition of British medical academic journal Public Health. The research also concludes that men are 1.34 times more vulnerable to stroke than women, and the mortality rate among men from the disease is higher than among women. Yoon said the higher survival rate of women means women live longer with disabilities from stroke. However, he said the study was statistical research analyzing the various causes of stroke to find more effective methods to prevent the disease but was not clinically conclusive.
