The country's largest port city Busan has swiftly climbed up the rankings as a popular venue for international conferences.
City officials said on Monday recent findings by the Union of International Associations show Busan ranked 41st in the world for having hosted 37 international conferences in 2006. That's a leap of 32 notches in rank from the year before.
The UIA applies strict standards to what it considers an international conference.
The meeting must either be hosted by an international organization or have more than 300 participants, more than 40 percent of whom must be foreigners and from at least five countries.
