The summit between President Roh Moo-hyun and U.S. President George W. Bush will be advanced from late September or early October to the beginning of next month. The summit will now be held on Sept. 7 on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, which takes place in Sydney on Sept. 8-9.
The change comes after the second inter-Korean summit was postponed from the end of this month to early October. The South Korea-U.S. summit will focus on North Korea¡¯s disablement of its nuclear program under a Feb. 13 six-nation agreement and cooperation in talks toward replacing the armistice that officially still halts hostilities on the Korea Peninsula with a permanent peace. The rescheduling of the two summits offers an opportunity for the results of Roh¡¯s talks with Bush to impact the inter-Korean meeting. Presidential chief national security secretary Baek Jong-chun will visit Washington from Aug 27 to 29 to discuss the agenda with U.S. National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley.
