Ban Meets N.Korea Envoy Over Summit

United nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon invited North Korea¡¯s Ambassador to the UN Pak Gil-yon to his office in New York on Tuesday, two weeks ahead of the second inter-Korean summit. The two discussed the summit and international aid to North Korea, which is suffering from recent flood damage.

Of the 75-minute meeting, the UN chief talked with the ambassador for 20 minutes with only one official from each side present. Ban welcomed the summit scheduled for Aug. 28-30 in Pyongyang and promised support for it. ¡°In this connection he emphasized the importance of the six-party talks and expressed his hope for a smooth implementation¡± of a Feb. 13 agreement in the talks to dismantle the North¡¯s nuclear program, Ban¡¯s spokeswoman Michele Montas said. Ban ¡°reaffirmed the UN¡¯s readiness to offer help or assistance towards a peaceful, nuclear-free, prosperous Korean Peninsula,¡± she added.

Pak promised to deliver Ban¡¯s hopes for the success of the inter-Korean summit to Pyongyang, and thanked the UN chief for his sympathy for North Korean flood victims and the world body¡¯s humanitarian aid.
