Lee Myung-Bak led his rival for the Grand National Party nomination Park Geun-hye by seven to 11 points, a Chosun Ilbo-Gallup poll reflecting the terms of the GNP presidential primary found. Gallup Korea combined the votes of GNP members, a group of civilian electors and an opinion poll in the same way the GNP will on Aug. 19. But 14 percent of civilian electors were undecided, making them a crucial variable in the primary.

Asked, ¡°Which candidate would you choose in the GNP presidential primary on Aug. 19?¡± 51.1 percent of delegates supported Lee, 41 percent Park, 1.1 percent Won Hee-ryong, 0.5 percent Hong Jun-pyo, and 6.3 percent were undecided. Among GNP members, 46.3 percent said Lee, followed by Park at 39 percent, Won at 1.5 percent and Hong at 0.5 percent. Some 12.7 percent of party members were undecided.

Among civilian electors, 45 percent supported Lee, 36.8 percent Park, 2.1 percent Won, 1.9 percent Hong and 14.2 percent were undecided. In the opinion poll, Lee led with 41.7 percent, followed by Park with 30.7 percent, Won with 3 percent and Hong with 1.4 percent. Some 23.3 percent were undecided.
The GNP nominates its presidential candidate by allocating 80 percent to the outcome of a ballot of 45,717 delegates, 69,496 party members and 69,496 civilian electors. The remaining 20 percent is decided by the opinion poll.
