Korea is expected to begin free trade talks with Australia before long as a bilateral study on the feasibility of a trade pact is currently underway.

Finance Minister Kwon O-kyu directed officials to actively pursue an FTA with Australia during a meeting on Monday.

"The results of the joint study will come out at the end of the year, but if an interim assessment deems the FTA as necessary, carry on with the implementation," Kwon said.

A ministry official said, "The government has been lukewarm about a trade pact with Canberra but following the FTA with the U.S., it figures that additional trade agreements will produce more benefits than losses."
