Samsung Group has begun restructuring its electronics units. The group announced Wednesday that Park Jong-woo, president of Samsung Electronics Digital Media, will also lead Samsung Techwin's camera unit.
Industry insiders see the shuffle as the start of a bigger business and personnel reorganization.
Techwin which produces digital cameras has been competing within the group with camcorder maker Samsung Electronics for control over digital visual gadgets.
The distinction between camcorders and digicams is increasingly blurry, as digital cameras now shoot video and camcorders take still pictures.
Along with Park's new posting, Techwin's digital camera R&D and marketing staff will move from their Seongnam offices to Samsung Electronics' Suwon branch. Forty percent of Techwin's revenue comes from digital cameras.
The move implies that Samsung Electronics will assume control over digital visual devices and that future personnel reorganization will be centered within that company.
Techwin will focus on the defense industry including precision machinery.
