Singles accounted for one in five households in Seoul as of 2005, statistics show. Single households numbered 676,000, accounting for 20.4 percent of 3.31 million households in the 2005 census, according to the Seoul metropolis webzine ¡°e-Seoul¡± on Monday.

The number of single households grew 76.9 percent or 294,000 households compared to 1995. The proportion of single households was 6.7 percent in 1985 and 12.9 percent in 1995.

By age, most singles -- 193,000 or 28.5 percent - were in their 20s. Some 26.2 percent or 177,000 were in their 30s, followed by 127,000 or 18.9 percent in their 60s. Singles in their 40s accounted for 15.2 percent or 103,000, and those in their 50s for 10 percent or 68,000. The number of single householders in their 60s was 127,000, more than double the 56,000 in 1995.

Women accounted for 76.5 percent (97,000) of single households, three times more than the 30,000 single male households. Chang Hyeok-jae, a Seoul city official said, ¡°There¡¯s been a rapid change in household demographics due to the low birthrate, declining number of marriages, increasing number of divorces and the aging society.¡±
