Afghanistan Hostage Crisis: a Timeline
The government has officially confirmed that one of 23 Korean hostages was killed by Taliban militants on Wednesday. The victim is the Rev. Bae Hyung-kyu who led volunteers taken hostage in Afghanistan, Foreign Ministry spokesman Cho Yong-hee said.

The 42-year-old went to Afghanistan to conduct medical aid activities with the kidnapped volunteers. Bae founded the Saemmul Church in Bundang, of which the hostages are members, along with the Rev. Park Eun-jo. The late reverend is known to have been passionate in guiding the young believers of the church. As the father of an elementary third grader girl, he participated in volunteer work in Bangladesh in April and planned to fly to Africa for more aid work after returning from Afghanistan.
