In wrangling over a government decision to merge pressrooms at government agencies and limit press access to officials, the administration and media organizations improbably produced an agreement to work for the abolition of the National Security Law instead.
The Government Information Agency in a press release Tuesday said the government and media organizations ˇ°share the viewˇ± that the decades-old security law ˇ°is a stumbling block to the freedom of the press. We have agreed to make joint efforts to abolish the law, and urge the National Assembly to deal with the matter sincerely."
The discussions took place between the office of the senior presidential press secretary and the GIA on one side and the Korea Journalists Association, the Broadcasting Producer Association of Korea, the National Union of Media Workers, the Korea Internet Newspaper Association, and the Korean Internet Journalist Association on the other. Representatives from these organizations were also panelists in a live TV debate with President Roh Moo-hyun on June 17.
