Wentworth Miller, star of the U.S. hit series ¡°Prison Break¡± which recently started airing on Korean terrestrial channel SBS, attracted the hype during his March visit to Seoul, even before the show had been imported here. So what¡¯s the magic?
Miller was born in the U.K. on June 2, 1972 but raised in Brooklyn, New York. He studied English literature at Princeton. Prior to ¡°Prison Break¡±, he appeared in small parts in several dramas and films. The bigger of them include ¡°Underworld¡± (1999), ¡°Joan of Arcadia¡± (2003) and ¡°The Human Stain¡± (2003), in which he played a young Anthony Hopkins. But since then, he has been named as one of the 100 most beautiful people by People magazine and one of the top 10 most handsome men in the world by female Chinese netizens. A Korean apparel ad he appeared in spread on the Internet even before it aired in Korea.
First of all, though, there are the looks, especially the toned body. His mixed German, English and Russian background gives him a little extra mystery that sets him apart from other drama pretties. He also looks younger than his years, making his style a hot trend in Korea.
But of course his popularity owes everything to the success of the series. Unlike Korean dramas with their unvarying focus on money or adultery, and most professional world portrayed in most U.S. dramas, ¡°Prison Break¡± shows us a different world and focuses on eternal buddy values. Miller's character, with his cool-headed but heartwarming charisma, bedazzled modern viewers in an emotionally barren world.
Let¡¯s not forget the tattoo. It may look creepy at first glance with its angels and demons, but in the drama it helps him find his way out of prison by working as a map. Korean fans go wild whenever Miller's character solves a coded secret in the tattoo. A spokesman for fashion tattoo service Tattoobox says the tattoo has sent interest in fashion tattoos soaring. Office worker Kim Gyu-nam (28) says "I enjoy watching U.S. dramas, but the ¡®Prison Break¡¯ hero is the most distinctive. Miller's stardom is due to the casting of a new actor whose image fits well with the drama's mysterious ambience."
