The market capitalization of the Korean stock market topped W1,000 trillion for the first time in history on Wednesday, when Seoul shares hit a new record high (US$1=W938). The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) closed at an all-time high of 1,838.41 points, up 32.91 points from the previous session. The tech-heavy Kosdaq gained 7.31 points to 804.02 points, returning to the 800-point level.

The market value of the two indexes combined stood at W1,014.1 trillion, the worldĄŻs fifteenth largest, after reaching W800 trillion in April and W900 trillion in May. Chung young-woan with Samsung Securities said demand and supply are in good balance in the Korean stock market, as nearly W1 trillion has flowed into equity fund products a week and there has been no selling spree by foreign investors.
