A local consumer rights group, citing increasing complaints from buyers, is calling for a public recall by Samsung Electronics of its plasma display panel (PDP) TVs.
Consumer Korea said that four models of Samsung PDP TVs don't work properly because of a defect and urged Samsung to offer free repairs. The models are SPD-42S5HD, SPD-42S5HDM, SPD-42P5HD, and SPD-42P5HDM.
The most common complaint was that half the television screen turned black about one year after the set was purchased.
Consumer Korea pressed Samsung to take responsibility and offer free repairs since the problem is related to a technical defect and is not the fault of consumers.
Samsung said it is not planning a public recall, but it is reviewing extending the free repair warranty of the products from one year to two due to growing complaints.
