Korea Rejects Another Shipment of U.S. Beef
Korea has rejected yet another U.S. beef shipment, this time 130 kg from a Tyson processing plant that arrived here on June 2, after it turned out that the meat was only cleared for the U.S. market. The first such case was a shipment of 66.4 tons that arrived on May 25 and 26.

The Agriculture Ministry on Tuesday said the U.S. Department of Agriculture informed Seoul that the two beef shipments were mistakenly sent to Korea by U.S. beef exporters who bought beef destined only for the U.S. market, and Food Safety and Inspection Service officials issued the export permit without carefully checking the contents.

The ministry has now halted imports from two Tyson plants and the U.S. says it suspended the official who issued the wrong export permit.

Korea agreed to resume import of U.S. beef guaranteed by export certificates to prevent mad cow disease. The ministry will decide on further steps after reviewing the U.S. government¡¯s response.
