LG Electronics will provide free insurance coverage to 60,000 customers who own the company's high-end Prada phone. Prada phone users will be given up to W200,000 (US$1=W928) if their phone breaks, even if the owner is at fault. The free insurance is different from the existing product warranty.
It is unusual for a company to subscribe to insurance to cover broken products on behalf of customers. An LG Electronics spokesman said Sunday that the company will take out the insurance policy as a way to burnish the phone's image as a top-drawer product.
Developed by LG Electronics in cooperation with Italian fashion house Prada and released here on May 15, the phone has sold 25,000 units in Korea. Some 100,000 Prada phones have sold around the world. The luxury handset costs W880,000.
