LG has found itself the center of attention after filing a patent for a washing machine with an MP3 player. The washing machine has audio speakers on its lid. The product is still just in the idea stage, but LG has filed a patent for it in the U.S.
When news of the patent came out, it provoked a lot of discussion on the Internet, including on Cnet, a leading U.S. IT news website. The washing machine seems to go against common sense since most washing machines make a lot of noise when they're working.
The news outlets questioned the usefulness of the MP3 feature, pointing out that most people don't want to listen to music in front of a droning washing machine.
However, LG Electronics thinks differently. LG said, "Mostly it is aimed at responding quickly to consumer demand in the rapidly-changing electronics market." That means the company thinks it is better to pre-emptively occupy every conceivable space as the fiercely competitive electronics market evolves in unexpected directions.
"This washing machine looks like a bold idea, but who knows? Someday, every housewife in the world might want to listen to music in front of their washing machine," LG said.
LG Electronics has the technology to build a washing machine that makes no more than 55db of noise, which is the level of a normal indoor conversation. If future washing machines really do make so little noise, then housewives may really want to listen to music as they do laundry. Whether LG's fresh idea will prove fruitful remains to be seen.
